Wheel Steering Upgrade

I'm toying with an idea similar to the picture. A transom wheel with a no feed back Teleflex helm. I would use a stainless steel wheel instead of the traditional wooden one shown.

The picture is from a Com Pac Horizon Cat. I talked to Gerry Hutchins over at Com Pac Yachts about parts to make this system work. But if anyone on here has any ideas I would love to hear them.

I feel a pedestal wheel would take up way to much space, by the time it's lower than the main sheet the pedestal would be at the jib winches. Any ideas? Comments? Suggestions?

We were actually looking at a C-250 years ago because I was suffering from "wheel envy", until I looked at the practicality of it all. a big thing was the cost of an autopilot for a wheel vs a tiller. We use the autopilot a lot. Then there is the simplicity of a tiller, much less to break, and nothing to adjust. I'm over it now, and besides, how can you just not love the look of a beautifully varnished tiller?

I believe that in the end, you will find the wheel to be very intrusive into the use and function you have in the cockpit of smaller boats, but hey....it does look nice.

If you need to build it out from the transom like the Compac then it seems it would take up a lot of space. If you go through with it convert it in a way that you can go back to a tiller without looking like a hack job in case you don't like it or want to sell the boat. Maybe there is a way to build something temporarily without cutting holes in your boat to see if you like it. Just curious why you want to convert?

Absolutely would build it in a way that I could easily return to a tiller. If you look close at the Com Pac pictures its almost just a mahogany box built between the seats. I figure if the whole thing comes off the transom into the cockpit 16" than it would be less than the length of the tiller sticking into the cockpit.

Don: I don't have an autopilot, I'm not against the idea of getting one, but I day sail on a lake I'm not cruising to the Azores or anything ;)

I will play with some design ideas for a bit. And post on the development of this.

Has anyone converted their C-22 to wheel steering? I would some technical advice
