Can the tiller steering system on my 1998 Hunter 240 be converted to a wheel system? There are Edson systems in the West Marine catalog. Are there other possibilities?
Don't want to spoil your fun, but do you really want a wheel on a 24' boat? A tiller is the picture of simplicity and efficiency. A direct connection between you and the rudder. Provides feedback, is highly unlikely to fail and requires no maintenance. Just my opinion. Be sure to follow your own heart.Ron Mehringers/v Hydro-Therapy
OK a wheel is really cool and yachty looking. But, you are going to pay a lot of money for something that will likely be a big hassle and maintenance headache. What will you get in return? You will get a steering system that looks cool and will give you far less feedback. You will have a much harder time telling if your boat is balanced. I recommend that if you want a wheel, buy a bigger boat that comes with one.
recently converted to hydraulic wheel steering. also tied motor to work in concert with rudder . now no feed back. hands off steering. great single handed or lazy sailor. one finger turning even in heavy wind. cost me $525.00 with some used parts. best improvement i made so far. better handling around docks etc. due to rudder and motor working together for more thrurst.
