I picked up an Edson binnacle recently, to convert my 75 H27 to wheel steering, has anyone out there done this that wants to offer any hints?

On the 27 models that came with a wheel standard, how far is the binnacle from the rudder post, center to center, I am trying to figure if the binnacle is placed towards the aft, the center, or forward in the cockpit.

Thanks,

Brian

Could you measure? In my old marina there were at least three H27s with wheels. In my current little Florida marina there is one. I am sure you could ask an owner or sneak aboard for a quick measurement. But maybe someone here will pony up. I could get the numbers when I go to my boat tomorrow if I could remember(turned 67 today).

Did the binnacle come with all the parts? In other words do you have the radial wheel(quandrant) for the rudder post, the cables/chain, and the below deck sheaves?

don't have the exact measurements

but these two pictures may help (I'm going with the assumption that the 75 and 80 had similar cockpits). The binnacle guard is pretty much even with the corner of the side benches. If I had to guess the wheel is approximately a foot from the edge of rear bench.

edited to add: I remembered that the wheel lines up almost perfectly with the jib cleats

Mine is a 75 27 that was converted. I have the cover on for a few more weeks, or I would measure it. I think it may be different than the later models because the benches run into the cooler (or storage bin), not like Manny's. This may force it more forward. I'm 5'-8" and my head hits the backstay. It also has a 20" dia. wheel. Ive thought just the opposite, pull it off and use the tiller. I would also plan on a split backstay so you aren't bumping the backstay all the time.

I had a 76 that only had the tiller I did convert it to the pedistal. But that was long ago! I do remember that the deck required extra layers off lamination to support the pedistal. Also when you CUT the rudder tube to install the pulley wheel, a section of the tube is cut out. I wish I had saved the instructions so I could send them to you. I do remember that the pulley wheel on the rudder shaft has to be level with the deck. I cannot remember how thick the deck has to be reinforced, maybe edson has a history area because they supplied the kit for my Hunter. One very important thing to remember is have a fan for ventilation that area is really enclosed and the fumes can be real bad. sk2373
