Any tips on removal? I’m leaving the gear puller on overnight while tensioned. So far I’m just bending the puller jaws. Will heat discolor it?

Mine was a bear to remove after 20+ years in place. I borrowed a bigger puller from an auto parts store, kept it cranked tight, applied Kroil penetrant numerous times and gently tapped the shaft to set up vibration. Over the course of two or three days it finally popped off.

Good luck.

Heat may well discolor the SS hub.

Continue with pressure and some PB Blaster or similar on the shaft.

Once off, it is probably a good idea to remove it frequently to prevent it from seizing. The wheel hub and shaft are both SS and Edson does not use a tapered fitting. Our wheel is frequently removed because it is easier to move about the cockpit at the dock with the wheel out of the way.

Went to the boat today and the puller was on the cockpit sole. I put a blanket down if it popped so no gel coat chips. Puller popped but the wheel did not. Took Richard’s advise (thanks) and O’Reillys Auto had a loaner program for tools. 2ton puller with three jaws that didn’t bend. I had to pull the wheel off it’s whole travel which is strange. 6-7 yrs ago, I had the wheel off and lubed it wheel bearing grease when it went back on. This time I used white lithium grease.

Good to hear. I think O'Reilly's is where i borrowed mine.

As Dave suggested, pull and regrease it regularly and you shouldn't have any more problems.
