I have a catalina 30 from 1990 with an Autohelm 4000 wheel pilot since 1991. The wheel pilot need to be replaced. I have looked to the new Raymarine wheel pilot. When installing this pilot you need also to install a feature connected to your rudder to measure the angle of the rudder. To my opinion there to no space to install this in a Catalina 30. Has somebody face this problem and knows a solution. Thanks in advance.

I had one installed 'professionally' two years ago, same problem, so the rudder reference unit wasn't installed. It will work without one, but not as well. Last year I came across a post, I think on the C30 website, indicating that it can be installed after all. Can't remember, though, how (I seem to recall it was installed upside down, but worked perfectly). I think its worth while to trawl through archives to find the solution, if no-one comes up with one on this thread. Good luck.

I really wish I took pictures of the install

I have had a lot of people asking about this. I really wish I had taken some pictures of the install. Maybe I will get some when I go down this weekend but I have a HUGE list of things to do this weekend to get ready for a 17 day trip coming up in 12 days. These are things like: Installing a Link 10 battery monitor Draining the hotwater tank by removing the drain spout (gets more stuff and cleans the tank much better) Cleaning the ground wire connection on the engine Tighten up the altinator belt And the list goes on!

That is a MK1 setup. The MKII has a slightly different setup on the rudder box. In the MKII you have to cut the back of the rudder box and put the sensor in the rear lazzerette.

Problem solved

Thank you all for answering my question of the problem to instaal a Raymarine Wheel pilot with a rudder sensor. I know how to do it with help of your drawings and foto's. But I learned from my supplier that Raymarine has announced a new pilot the smartpilot X-5 where you don't need a rudder sensor anymore. This will be available in the Netherlands next month. So instead of drilling holes and installing a rudder sensor under the Propan tank I wait a month. Thank you all for your help Henk
