Having only ever sailed a boat with tiller and liking the feel better than the wheel has anybody thought of taking the wheel and stering pedistel out of ther 28.5 and installing a tiller where the emergency tiller goes. Cliff

Wheel or tiller, interesting question

Cliff, Interesting question. I recently purchased a Hunter 27 (1978) with tiller steering. I have been thinking about going the other way, replacing the tiller with a wheel. In fact, I logged on today to post a question, to see if anyone knew if it would be difficult to convert my boat from tiller to wheel. Maybe we could work out a swap....

Not designed for tiller steering.

Cliff: This boat was not designed with a tiller steering system in mind. Try out the emergency tiller and see what you think. The early Hunters (Cherubini's) had a very light helm. The later models a not that light and consequently they tend to have a large wheel to give the proper feel of the helm. I personally feel that this would take a nice boat and relegate it to basically "Junk" status for resale. I have to agree with you that the tiller is a much better feel however. If you want a boat with a tiller, you should go buy one and sell the one you have!

Pro's

Cliff, I've had both kinds of boats but solidly prefer a wheel. Although the you have to deal with a capstan a wheel is much more passanger frendly as it always stays in the same place. No more slaming someone in the knee caps coming about. My 30T has the rear entry so I always back into my slip. A wheel gives you much tighter control over the rudder when going in reverse. Just my 2 cents worth....

On a lighter note.

Cliff, I have sailed both tiller and wheel boats, and would have to agree a tiller is nice. I have grown to get a better feel from my 28.5 wheel, and at this point it isn't worth the retro. dollars. I can find some other ways to spend that cash with better performance gains. I have spent some time optimizing the factory set up, get the slop out so to speak. Kevin P.S. I'll always be a tiller head.
