What's Wrong in These Pictures?

I'm curious how many ABYC standards violations you can spot in these photographs. We'll just let this be a leaning opportunity and not discuss the specific ship.

Let me take a stab at this.
1. Plastic on steps
2. Unsecured floor boards
3. Fire extinguisher too close to fuel line/pump
4. Gauge on fire extinguisher looks low...hard to tell
5. Filter wrench laying on deck
6. Fuel filters should be metal and not clear plastic/glass
7. Looks like flammable liquids stored improperly
8. Fuel shutoff handle (last picture) improperly routed
9. Electrical wire/cabling routing improper
10. Danger High Voltage sign should be on front of box and probably red letters
11. The hose and shut off valve routed thru the deck looks like it is routed right over an electric motor
12. The numerous coils of what appears to be electrical wire around the yellow cylinder...just not ship shape
13. Looks like PVC used for wire conduit
14. Switches on distribution panel exposed to incidental contact
15. Deck panels that are secured present numerous trip hazards and render quick access to the bilge impossible

Piping and valves need to be labeled.
(Mikem, note that the wrench is hanging almost vertically from the water filters and hitting the curved hull side)
Woah.. look at those big battery cables running from under the oil storage rack !

Yep, Kloudie, the whole engine room (I assume that's what it is) is a maritime disaster waiting to happen. I missed the battery cables. Mike

The gear clamp (pic #3) on the thru hull fitting which is not double clamped is a tad rusty for an all SS gear clamp.

What's wrong with them..... Ummm that "ship" or IMHO "dock side attraction" should not have been sailed into a hurricane.....

Forget ABYC violations that tired, worn out and in disrepair vessel, and it's now deceased captain, combined to result in the death of a Claudine Christian.. I personally Bounty being re-paired in Boothbay in 2001/2002 and also the most recent re-fit in Boothbay, it was in SCARY shape BOTH times. I can't imagine what damage "we like to chase hurricanes" and "we sailed in 70' seas" would have done to her badly rotted structure that was "patched up" like you'd patch a tree fort...

IMHO this event was 100% avoidable..

So yes, that is the HMS Bounty..... IMO Capt Robin Walbridge did not "respect" the sea and all her power and the sea won..

I find Walbridges' comment: "We like to chase hurricanes" is = to "We like to let a toddler pack our parachutes and then go skydiving" especially on a vessel like that, in the condition of disrepair she was in (as witnessed with my own eyes)..

Perhaps he got lucky once or twice but eventually the gun goes off.. Sad, very, very sad.:doh::doh::doh:

There is one important piece of data missing and that is the date those pictures were taken. In February of 2001 the ship was taken to Booth Harbor, Maine (Samples Shipyard) for a refit and then went on a world tour. Were those pictures a before or after?

Benny,

I saw her being refit and walked around her in the process of her getting new oak planking below the waterline. SOME ribs had been repaired but many of them, I don't have any idea how a screw would hold into them. The boat was in rough shape even after the "re-fit" from what I saw personally.

The guy who took the pics claims they were taken in May 2012:

The rot was so extensive in 2001/2002 when I saw her I was amazed at the extent of the job to even try to fix it. While some of it was "fixed", ribs replaced etc. a lot of it, from what I saw, was not.. I can not comment on the recent refit, other than seeing it after it was mostly buttoned up, but the photos again show a "partial" replacement of perhaps the worst ribs that did not get replaced in 2001/2002Photo HMS BountyFrom 2007. I could literally see through the hull 6" above the waterline...

Thanks for those pictures Maine, it was indeed in real rough shape. What gets me is that the ship was used commercially and I'm sure subject to USCG inspections. The boat was berthed in St. Petersburg, Florida recently for a few years and was rented out to movie producers and event holders. They had to have passed those inspections. Some of the stuff on those pictures can not be hidden or masked.
