What’s this hole in the shelf for?

Anyone know why they put this hole in the shelf under the sink? This is from a 2004 Hunter 306.

something round... not factory, just a previous owner wanting to "make it his own". :)

I'm guessing that it was intended to hold some kind of container for food scraps too large to send down the galley sink drain that could then be emptied into a garbage bag. If I'm right, it's very clever idea.

Hmmm, maybe a dual-use cup holder/toilet brush holder? I mean, nobody likes a single-tasker, right?

Seriously though, I think I'll go with Peggie's suggestion and look for a small wastebasket to throw under there and see how I like it.

I'd use something besides a waste basket...something that can be washed. Cuz food scraps are wet--or at least damp--and can be oily. If you can provide me with the dimensions--diameter and depth--I'll try to come up with some suggestions...inexpensive of course.

I have the same boat, same year, same hole, and no earthly idea what it's for. I guess I've always assumed it was for putting something tall in there, but I've been able to live with the boat for years without having that tall thing onboard. Oh well...

If I had one I'd put a cup holder in it to hold the squeeze bottle of soap upright and not on it's side in the sink with the top open like usually happens.

Maybe something as simple as a way to store tall spray cans and keep them upright and secure.

Looks like this is the perfect Fire Extinguisher that would fit in the hole, stay put and still be able to get passed the deep sink profile. Good spot for one though.

Here are some under-side measurements: ~19 inches deep (cabinet front to back); ~8 inches wide (cabinet side wall to the edge of the thru-hull access below); ~13 inches tall. I suppose I failed to get the actual size of the hole :(, but it's approximately 4 inches diameter. I was able to fit a small dollar store plastic wastebasket under there at least.

I really only need the diameter of the hole and the available depth under it. From what you've posted, I'm thinking a stoneware kitchen utensils holder would be perfect and the price is right! Stoneware Utensil Holder - Utensil Crock | Red Hill General Store The middle one is the right size for your hole and I think the lip around the top will let it hang . Won't leak, easy to remove to empty and wash out.
