What's the right torque for thermostat housing bolts

Hi,
Could anyone help?
While replacing the thermostat, I broke one of the two bolts securing the thermostat housing at a level of 12 ft-pounds. Then the lower housing cracked at a torque of less than 15 ft-lbs. of the bolt on the right side, when facing aft. I was very carefull stepping in less than 5 lb increments with a torque wrench. My plan will be to torque to 15 ft-lbs, in 2 lbs increments.

Engine: 1989 Universal M-25XP

As I recall, the manual says 35 to 42 or so ft-lbs.

Thanks,
Chris

You HAVE to understand that the units things are measured in is important to getting your torque wrench to work correctly. 35 to 42 ft-lb is really high for a housing. I'm thinking that your manual is stating in-lb and not ft-lb.

thanks for comments. My mistake was thinking that the bolt was a M10 because it's associated wrench size is 10mm but it correctly refers to diameter. The bolt is a 6mm which should be torqued to 7 to 8 ft-lbs.
