What's the easiest way to add tell tales to mainsail

I recently purchased a Hunter 41 with a Seldom in mastering furler. The mainsail doesn't have any telltales left & I'd like to install some. The sail is installed in the mast now. So what's the best way to tackle this job? Should I go up the mast or is it just as easy to drop the sail with the halyard? Also don't know if it matters but the previous owner had removed the vertical battens. If anyone has precise location placement for the telltales that might help too.

I have a hunter 38. It has A Doyle mainsail with full vertical battens. The telltales are about 2 feet below the top spreaders.

I use the stick-on type of tales. My tales are on the leach at each batten and between battens to see how the air flow is coming off the sail. Actually it is time to replace mine. They are getting tattered and frayed.

I think you will need to drop the sail in order to reach the upper places where you will want to place a telltail
