Need to sand and repaint the bottom of my H26. What is the safest and best way to jack up the boat while on the trailer. Also how does one get the whole Centerboard sanded and painted. Nearest life is 170 miles away. Thanks Mike

Stuck?

The safest way is to lift it with straps and put on boat stands. Does not sound like an easy option for you. I have seen boats takeen off of the trailer by using the trailer itself as a lever. Lower the tounge all the way to the ground, brace the stern and raise the tounge as high as you can brace the front and you are off of the trailer. Now, having said that it is the absolute last way I would do it. Two A frames with straps or somthing similar would be a much better way even a front loader or a forklift with straps would be more acceptable. Hell, if it is on the trailer make it a weekend and go somwhere with the proper facilities. Remember not to get in a hurry and do something stupid. Do not mean to sound harsh but I think we have all gotten too focused on getting home or getting the job done and lost sight of what is prudent. I know some who have made the mistake of being in a hurry and gotten lucky and others who made it their last mistake and flight, ever.

Kansas sailors have a problem!

We have a problem, Mike. Not too many boat yards in Kansas and what is available is expensive. No competition. I managed to paint the bottom of our H23.5 by jacking the trailer up, placing stands under the transom then removing the wheels and letting it down.. It got pretty close at the bow but I managed and got all but a couple of inches of the keelboard too. The edger/painter pads on a pole work real well. Use them for sanding with the 3M sanding screens. My paint is green and the dust is really nasty on your clothes. Use a mask because I'm sure all that copper isn't good to inhale. I just sanded down to a sound surface and didn't attempt to get it clean to the primer. The bunker pads on the trailer got a good coat of paint too. I used some 4X4 poles with 2X10 padded tops as props. Where do you sail? Tuttle Creek is probably closest but very boring. Come join us a Perry Lake for a couple of days. Ken S/V Wouff Hong

Got a drive thru barn?

I used my dad's barn. Drove my 23.5 into center of barn. Took two heavy duty tow straps from SAMS CLUB and placed them fore and aft outside the trailer bunks. Attached a come-a-long to each end of the straps and to the barn's overhead beams. I removed the bolt holding the centerboard assembly from inside the boat. This will allow the entire assembly to drop as the boat is lifted. Be sure to knot the end of the centerboard lifting halyard so it will not pull all the way out. I guess the 26 is like the 23.5. I carefully racheted each of the come-a-longs in turn until the boat lifted from the trailer a few inches. I then put a third strap close forward of the centerboard and attached two more come-a-longs overhead. Rachet each come-a-long until the boat is as high as needed. Remove centerboard assembly. Drive trailer out of the way. Put safety stands under and paint away. Hey Rick, where do you keep your 23.5? Mine's in Pascagoula Inner Harbor.

hull

The hull is supported by the bunk boards on the trailer. If you wish to jack up the boat off the trailer bunk one at a time, go ahead but you will never catch me doing that. Like I SAID< i MAY BE A LITTLE CRAXY BUT NOT DUMB. I recall and have said it previously, the sight of an armless man who tried that stunt and lost an arm makes you think hard. You will need to lift the boat up with a lift and/or crane. Use wide nylon strapes which will go behind the bunk boards and in front of the Centerboard. Make sure you tie the straps together so they will not slip. Lift up and you are fine. Place a minumu of six jack stands underneath but more like eight if you cannot leave the baot in the slings. If using an unknown lift that you do not know the lifting capability, be careful. You cann replace boats but not humans. Be careful what you do so you can pick on me later. Crazy Dave

bottom painting

I am neither advocating this method or saying I have done it, it was suggested to me by broker who sold us our boat,He suggested using lines from port side winch and cleats to go over boat to starboard side and down to trailer ,fasten, tighten securly to trailer and lower trailer bunk on one side at a time , then reverse, , there should be a way, lets all think, liked the tripod, MIke B

Thanks

Thanks to everyone for their advice and warnings. I have thought of most of the dangers. My barn doesn't have sturdy enough beams to hoist the boat. And I don't think my neighbor would let me tie up his tractors for a day. I will probably bite the bullet and drive it to Wichita. To Ken I sail at Milford Lake, a great lake. Used to race my Hobie at Lake Perry. Great parties. Mike
