What's that smell? And it's not the head...

When the temp gets above 90 or so, the interior of my 280 smells awful. It's not the holding tank or head, I am sure of that. The smell is a bit like diesel, but not totally. When I remove the velcro access panels in the cabin, I can smell the odor much stronger. Seems to be coming from the stern in the space between the hull and cabin interior. I had a minor fuel leak in spring, could it be old diesel? I can't describe the smell other than it does have a faint "fuelish" smell. But it's nothing like straight diesel. Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks

Time for a THOROUGH cleaning

With a good detergent bilge cleaner and lots of fresh water. Read the article in the Head MIstress Reference Library called "Boat Odors Aren't All in Your Head."

Not the bilge this time....

Thanks for the reply Peggy, but I think I have something else happening here. The airspace between the outer hull and inner cabin is where the odor is coming from. I've cleaned the bilge and the water is clear and odor free. I only get the smell when the outer hull heats up, mainly in the stern around the holding and fuel tank, but it doesn't smell like holding tank odor at all. Anyone have an idea? I can't really hose down this space because of all the wiring etc. in the area.... Any thoughts? thanks

Maybe you can hose it down..

I had a diesel spill and holding tank explosion, both of which went between the liner and hull on other boats, and in both cases, I used HOT water and detergent, sloshing it around as much as possible. Most will migrate to the bilge and that that does not should at least displace what was stinking. In any event, it worked. Good luck, RD

Only way to get rid of the odor is...

Get rid of the source, no matter where it is. Just getting water--hot or cold--and detergent to it isn't enough--any more than just putting clothes in water and detergent is enough. All the dirty water has to be rinsed out, whatever it takes. Otherwise you just create an oily detergent and water "soup" that'll stink even worse after it's been in there a while.
