My 1981 27' Cherubini has a boom with two lines running through it. One line has a metal hook on it at the end of the boom and it's obvious that line is for hooking into the reef cringle. But what is the other line for? It just terminates in a knot and its use is a mystery to me. Both lines exit from the boom near the mast where they pass through a sheave and a line stopper.

Stepean your boom should be equiped

so that you can run 2 reef lines through the boom. One on each side and an outhaul used to pull the clew of the mainsail towards the end of the boom. The reason you do not have two reef lines is because your sail only has one set of reef points in it. If in the future you buy a new mainsil and have two reef points in it you will be able to set the sail up correctly because your boom was setup for it already. To hook the reefing line correctly on you boat run a reef line through the boom and out under the pulley on the back of the boom. Then run the line up one side of you sail to the reef point in your sail. Pass the line trough the reef point and run it down the opposite side of the sail straight down to the boom in a vertical line from the reef point. Now attach the reef line to the side of the boom at a point on the boom about 1 1/2 inches rearward of this vertical spot. To make this attachment strong I run this line under the boom and attach it on the opposite side of the boom but you do not have to. Now when you want to use your outhaul after it has been attached to the mainsil just go to the boom release the and pull. There is a cleat to tie the line off to (on mine)under the boom. If you still can't figure out how to reef the mainsil let me know. http://www.angelfire.com/de2/WIT/JiffyReef.htm

Could the second line be ...

... your topping lift? My 26.5 has three lines: reef, outhaul and topping lift going through the boom and exiting at the mast with locking levers to secure them. Just a thought.

Lines in the boom

My 1980 H30 also had two lines in the boom. One was the outhaul (rope/cable) and the other was for tying in a first or second reef. The topping lift runs inside the mast and attaches to the end of the boom.
