Whats new in knot/apparent wind meter ?

My apparent wind meter is way off. Makes me suspect the wind speed also. I have to get up there and clean it up or replace it. Don't know how to do either. Once I am up there in a bosuns chair I want to get the work done correctly and fast. Tips? If I have to replace the cups and vane what with? Is there anything new or cool I should be looking at?

adjustment might be possible

You don't say which make and model of instruments you're using, but I'm using an older Raymarine ST50 which can be calibrated. Though I've never needed to do it, I saw somehting about it in the manual.

It's a very old Nav 5 system

More info: the wind direction always appears to be over the starboard fore deck even when it is not. The cups do not start to spin until the wind picks up to x knots. I am hoping it just needs a good cleaning up there.

I have a 1970s SR Mariner WS-1 and love it. I'm ordering a new masthead sender for it; it's still available (for now). It's easily adjustable and, as far as I know, doesn't lie.

I also have one of those handheld things which the kids like.

I also have the same SR Mariner WS-1 on my 33C, which hasn't worked since I bought the boat. Can you direct me to a parts supplier?

Unless you are very good at doing cosines in your head, a new wind system (integrated with your knotlog) will give you much more valuable TRUE wind angle and speeds. older stand alone device just give apparent, and you can see that by looking at your windex. A nice upgrade.
