What's in there?

I am rewiring my 1978 h30. Within the quarter birth there is a compartment for access to the electrical panel and a place for a battery (engine/start). It takes up about the first 18 inches of the quarter birth, right at the nav station. To the rear of that is a mystery. I was thinking of cutting it open and using the space for my power inverter. It seems that it would be the perfect place. Does anyone know what I will find when I open it up and more importantly does anyone know why I should not open up this compartment or install my inverter in there. Yes I would do what is neccessary to ventilate it. All thoughts appreciated.

There is a space under the quarter berth after the battery compartment that can be opened for storage. I removed the stern wall and non working refrig unit, removed the carpet and foam and glued up wall liner to the quarter berth. I have considered opening up the area under for extra storage but have not done so yet. The pic show different stages of progress over the years.
I have also done many improvements and upgrades also. If you have any other ideas or questions feel free to ask.

If you notice in the above pics I also trimmed off the 3 1/2" fiberglass headliner flange that use to hang down over the quarter berth entrance. This makes access much easier and does not adversely affect the port stern interior cabin wall in any way. It makes the quarter berth feel more inviting , spacious and less confining

On my 83 H30, there is another small locker behind the one that you have. It's about 12"x16"x6" and is pretty much useless. there is an angle in the bottom that follows the hull. it would be a good place to store spare engine parts or stuff that you rarely use. That's about it. It's really hard to get to it on my boat because of the Nav Station is bigger. and my berth looks narrower.

I hate inaccessible voids anywhere on any boat. My '74 H25 has/had several places like under your q-berth that seemed inaccessible. Of course I solved that! The very bow end of the v-berth is still one I have to open up. The rode locker drips into there, through there, and into the next-aft compartment. I want to open that up before it becomes mildewed in there. Under the settee berths, where they go past the bulkhead, was inaccessible too. On Diana this is the front end of the flexible water tanks. Because I extended the q-berth for more room I have about 9" behind its last bulkhead and made a separate compartment out of that. I also made several 'secret' stowage areas below and beside the cooler, under the bookshelf, other places you wouldn't know to look, for whatever I own that ought not to be seen by burglars, customs, and other unwelcome visitors.

The one place I do not have access is under the fuel tank which is mounted on a flat platform under the cockpit. I bought some 2-part foam from Defender today and will fill that space when it comes. Better to fill it with closed-cell foam than to leave it a void that WILL collect water, mold, mildew, and lost tools.
