What's in a Name?

Sitting in an anchorage in a warm part of the world and I watched a large Cat, about 45-50', lower their 12' center console RIB off the back of the boat with an electric winch. Must be nice I thought, such convenience, such ease of effort, what else is on board to make their cruising life easier I wondered.

Then I saw the boat's name, Simplicity, and other thoughts.

Hmmm... I was on my boat today and my dad called... we chatted for a while about old folk tunes and at one point he asked me if I remember the Burl Ives tune "Big Rock Candy Mountain".

And for some reason I thought "Candy Mountain" ... that would make an ironic name for a sailboat.

I’ll have to dinghy over tomorrow and see.

A few weeks ago saw a boat named Scout, the dinghy was named Dill. There was an English teacher onboard.

We need to rename our boat and one idea I have came from Ikea. I was in the store and they had a sign that was apologizing for their reduced inventory. "förlåt: Swedish for Sorry". Might be a good name for our yellow boat and save me from wanting to paint the hull blue.

Y O T or Pronounced Yacht

but it is really

T O Y or Y O T spelled backwards or seen in your review mirror.

It is suggested that naming also has a purpose. Should you need to call for assistance you’ll be asked… What’s is the name of your boat? This will be done by a person poised with a grease pencil ready to record the name in a log so the rescue team will get the accurate information needed to find you.
Imagine yourself using this new name three times on Channel 16. Consider how easy it is to say and how easy it is for other boats to understand. Now think of the time it will take to spell the name for the CG.

We have been doing that. Want a simple, easily heard name.

i think Förlåt could be a great choice... Except, getting the spelling correct is a problem and why it likely won't happen.

But...oops Sorry I dragged anchor... Sorry you need to come out and save my ass. I am Förlåt that I bought this boat.

While Forlat apparently means forgivable when translated from Swedish, if you translate from Norwegian it apparently means "abandon"
