OK, I've got the new old boat, paperwork is in order, checked all the equipment, picked out a name, and if the weather holds its in the water this Sunday. There will be a christening ceremony and all observances will be observed.

Problem is the old gal still needs some work and that will include a hull sanding and new paint...so I don't want to paint the name on just yet...

So how angry will the sea gods be if I sail her without a name? :naughty:

Don't take chances. Latex house paint washes off with alcohol. So paint the name in a temporary fashion then do your sanding and finishing and redo the name in better paint.

These guys did mine for 22.00 and that included shipping. Shipped same day I ordered and got here in less than 5 days. Wow!
That included the name with a second color outline and a small port of call lettering.
For that price you could apply the name and get another down the line...

She had a name but the PO removed it when he put on the current coat of paint. I didn't think to ask what it was, and he and his family now live on a houseboat in parts unknown.

So technically it would be a renaming, I guess I could subsitute ''the previous name of this fine ship' for the old name. May the sea gods have merrcy on my poor soul.

The Sea Gods are understanding......just pour some Abita or some wine over the bow and you'll be fine.

I sailed my Sea Pearl 21 for 19 years on Lake Erie without mishap. She had a name and was referred to by that name but the name was never put on. Rich

I purchased a boat that has a name which is a contraction of the PO's wife & kids names. I am planning to do a renaming ceremony but was advised by the PO in all seriousness that "a 'maiden' must pee in the bilge". My maiden (14 yo daughter) was not too keen on the idea but she can be bribed.
I suspect my leg was being pulled but want to ask all if this legend is true. Anyway I dont want to upset Poseidon and cause my boat bad luck so I need to cover all my bases. I will certainly use the ceremony described in the link above by 1977Oday22 as it is very formal sounding and a good enough reason to drink champagne and have a party.

How Diana got her name.

Diana, the patron (Roman) goddess of chaste young women.

I am a single parent of 2 daughters.
Diana is intellectual-- born of Zeus' head-- not sensual (not born of his loins).
She is the Huntress (and the boat is a Hunter).
She flits through the woods naked, hunting with a bow and arrow, but no man can catch her.
She is a Sagittarius (obviously).
And in the Philadelphia Museum of Art (in St Gauden's Madison-Square-Garden weathervane on exhibit there since 1932) she is lithe, lean, lovely and kinda cute. And green.

Only recently (prepping the hull for Brightside) I noticed the tape impression of the boat's former name... Moonshine-- one of my favorite names for boats especially since my dad, the designer, was a Cancer the moon-sign. Interesting... but then his own Hunter 25 was called La Cacciatrice-- the Huntress-- so 'Diana' stays.

BTW as long as you know the boat's name I don't think it matters if it's not painted on the boat itself. Get your paint-job right first!

my ericson hasnt ever had a name painted on her transom since i bought her--the requirements are the hailing port be on -- so the hailing port is on transom. my formosa is solitary bird--was before i bought her--i believe the restorer--who did a particularly poor job of restoring this boat--named her from a poem. i will keep the name as it is appropriate--lol
