I am in the process of purchasing a Beneteau 393, and I am confused by the lack of details on what each option includes. Perhaps you have purchased this option and can tell me more about it, or perhaps there is a resource I cannot find that gives details on : 1. "Inverter" Which manufacturer, Model #, output, sine or square wave ? 2. "Geneker Gear" What does this include, a port side winch maybe ? 3. Air Conditioner. What manufacturer, Model # Also, I am also curious if the grounding system that comes with the boat needs to be improved, or if it is beefy enough to protect from lightning, protects people in the water around the boat, etc ?

your dealer

should be able to give you all the specifics regarding the options. No grounding system will protect you from lightning.

Rick is right

you need to sit down with your dealer and get the answers to your questions. I know I bought Angels' Grace is Huntington and they were great to work with. Enjoy your new boat Charlie

The genneker gear option includes an extra Halyard, another winch, the sheets, tack line, blocks and padeyes at the bow and at the port and starboard quarters. it also includes an extra spinlock clutch for the halyard. The tack line insn't quite lone enough to make it all the way back to the cockpit. I think it was Beneteau's intention that it be cleated to one of the bow cleats in use. I am going to an extra long tack line so that I can lead it back to the cockpit, and am adding an extra spinlock clutch. The sheets provided are adequate, but maybe alittle too heavy for a really light genneker. Perhaps tapered sheets would be better. Again your dealer shoud be able to provide you with inverter and air conditioner information, (my boat has no such equipment). I would say that lightning protection is minimal, the only real grounding to the keel is the ground leads from the AC electrical panel, and the DC electrical panel. I've seen articles in back issues of magazines like "Sail" that have dealt with lightning protection in depth. Tey ave shown cabling from mast, chainplates, stays, etc.

You want protection from 500 gazillion volts?

I have found the rigging to be bonded but the through hulls are not. I would not want the lightning strike to blow out a through hull anyways. The keel is a better ground. When the power is directed through the keel to the water, those in the water will have a problem. The geneker gear includes the halyard, turning block on a swivel, sheets, and deck blocks. All lines are led back to the starboard side. The dealer can only tell you what is on the current model. I took delivery of a new 393 in May and some of the equipment was upgraded to a larger size or a newer model than what was specified. For specific information on equipment, contact Beneteau through their website. They are extremely helpful. http://www.beneteauusa.com/contact.php Jim

500 gazillion volts ?

No, actually I am pretty realistic that any lightning protection is limited. I am just trying to find what the upgrades might be between the standard Beneteau 393 configuration and best practices for grounding AC, grounding DC, and best practices for lightning protection. I am already including a Galvanic Isolator for example as an upgrade. From a lightning protection standpoint ... I fully expect bad things to happen to AC & DC components, just want to be sure I am doing the best thing to protect my family. In the absense of lightning, on a sunny day, I would also like to know that I won't shock myself going under the boat to inspect something. I am a little concerned that the Beneteau ground runs to the keel, which is insulated from the water by layers of paint, etc. Note, I have no plans for a single side band radio.

just pray

Having been bit by lightning a few years ago I'm of the opinion that nothing you do can help. I was hit at the masthead on a boat with a keel stepped mast which was bonded to the keel bolts. The through hulls were not bonded but on examination of the hull, "treeing" (burn marks) could be seen at all through hulls, also at the gudgeon and pintles. What that meant was that the charge went all over the boat from stem to stern. All the electronics went (except a small GPS and a hand-held vhf))the alternator went, all the lights etc. Luckily we were not holed. On my 393 I gave no thought to lightning protection. I did however get upgraded primary winches and an arch which I really like. The arch takes the radar and wind generator and I also can hang a 11 ft. rib with a 15 hp Yamaha on it.

Pls Tell Me About That Arch

I hadn't thought to do that. Where did you place it? Did you move your traveler to the arch ? Got a picture ? Dan

Arch

Dan, There's photos of the arch at the 393 site in the "Breathless" folder. It's not a Hunter so the traveller is not on the arch. :) The arch is a stock 423 arch which will fit the 393 with a slight modification at the transom. At the time I got the boat Beneteau did not have an arch as an option on the 393. I don't think they have one yet. Rick
