Just looked at a '82 H30 Cherobini in freshwater - what's it's worth ie, fair market value?

Let's forget for a moment that a boats worth what a buyer is willing to pay - I like it - I just don't want to pay more than it's worth - what's it worth?

It's seems to be OK condition - topsides and deck appear to have a decent, recent paint job - all the bightwork (what there is) is weathered to bare wood (neglect) - sails apear to be less than OK (old, maybe original - threads at genoa clew giving way/rotten) - all RIGGING appears servicable/OK - has RF 150 genoa - 2 LEWMAR 40 ST WINCHES - Yanmar 13 hp diesel - old but serviceable white bimini - virtually zero upgrades/renovations and has clearly not been 'babied' (not even maintained real well) - interior seems fine though original/dated. Basically, it appears it was just owned...doesn't even have a name!

Owner says he had the bottom 'redone' for $5,500 a couple/few years ago - all else seems original/old/weathered - but not abused. Several gelcoat cracks around forward deck and coach roof areas.

Let's assume a sea trial and survey don't show any big issues - what's this baby worth? I don't want to reveal the asking price cause I don't want it to influence your answer - so...

........what's the market value of a good but tired (somewhat negelected) Hunter 30 Cherobini..........?

She's got great LINES........love how she looks in the slip..........

Help - Thanks

Check "Classified Ads/Boats for Sale"

If you check "Classified Ads/Boats for Sale" (Hunter 30_74-83) on this site, the range is $10,000 to $18,000. There is one for $9,000, but the engine is not working. 2 years ago, a good answer would have been $13,000 to $20,000. The market is distressed, so the range of prices is lower, and broader, making it hard to put a value on the boat you are considering. I'd read through boats for sale on this and other sites, then offer on the low side.

As with all boats of this vintage, I would make your offer conditional on a survey to be completed after the contract is signed.

Good luck - the 30 is a great boat.

In my humble and biased opinion the Cherubinis are the best production line boats built. So worth the effort to bring them back to pristine condition. But wow, what a loaded question! "Sailing Texas" has one for $5000. and one for $12000. to give you some idea how crazy the market is. YachtWorld lists twenty-five from $6000. to $20000. How much work do you want to do? The really neglected ones are going to have engine problems, figure $8k or more to make it right for example. Really bad deck moisture could run as much. Like I said, tough question.

i would say what you are describing if the engine checks out ok and it is in sailable condition anything 10000 or less would be a steal.but im up here in canada where everything is exaggerated still 1982 models were the best in their class(cherubini that is)

The market is the market so all that about what someone is willing to pay is relevant. What is the local market in your area and what are the competing sellers of similar boats asking ?? A boat is poor or neglected use will always be a hard sell especially as you describe. The other thing is how anxious is the seller to sell it, how long has it been for sale ?? All that said start very low and you can go as high as you want.. IMHO I would start at $8000/ $9000. ( I cheated and found the boat on line but my suggested starting bid was not much different before I looked). Looks like you will need sails, interior cushions, boat has little electronics so unless you are willing to live with it just as is these will all be additional cost .Remember the price is set before surrey and trial so if it comes out good too late to a negotiator. You need to take the emotion out of this purchase until after you got your deal ! Most of the time there will be a counter offer unless you offer full asking price. You may want to tell the seller you won't beat them up on the sail etc canvas etc. and that is why you started low and the survey will be either a pass or fail not a negotiation tool.

After next passing a survey and an inspection by a diesel mechanic - it looks like I'm going to own my first 'big boat' - man, do I love her lines! Thanks for all the info leading up to this - can't wait to start bringing her back to tiptop shape.
