A few days before the end of the year there were a lot of postings about the 240 and 260 kick up rudder, etc. Someone had suggested using a kick up clam cleat which neither West Marine nor Boat U.S. have. Anybody ever heard of such a critter and where I might find one? The clam cleat system that came as stock on my '98 240 is very inadequate. Thanks Bill Welsch s/v Renewal

Cam Cleats?

If you mean those little gizmos on the cabin roof.... yeah, Hunter has stuck with those in spite of our complaints for years. I just replaced mine with a triple rope clutch from Spinlock. Spinlock is in the UK and, even though serveral others make similar ones, the triple from them fit a couple of the existing holes and I used the same 6 screws. Wish I'd done it years ago. The keel-board doesn't really need one but a matched set of 3 looks better. Those stock jam cleats (we call them other things) were always letting go at the most critcal moments, usually with a little puff of wind. With the rope clutches, the halyards never pop loose and go flying overboard or get tangled either. Hunter put a nice big thick aluminum plate under that cleat area which is easy to drill and tap so mounting isn't a problem. Just remember to put some caulk in the old holes. Ken S/V Wouff Hong

Rope Clutches vs. jam cleats

This is in response to Ken Shubert's posting: Ken, I have a 99 240 and I literally despise the jam cleats provided for the jib sheets. They come off at the worst possible times, result in tangled lines and manage to grab the sheets after releasing them when tacking -- on the whole, a real pain. Based on other postings here, I was about to purchase and install a pair of cam cleats with an integral fairlead. This seemed like the best solution. Am I to understand that you have replaced the jib sheet jam cleats with a spinlock rope clutch? This seems like a great idea, other than the cost. Instead of replacing the the existing units with a triple, why not just add a single clutch unit next to the two that are already there. Any comments from you or anyone else would be appreciated. I cannot face another season with the dreaded jam cleats.... Paul Jordan Mithrandir
