Look out! You might have a PIRATE situation! Had this happen once. If it looks like they want to board you, try to escape. Use the VHF to get help. If all else fails, shoot em with your flare gun. As an absolutely last ditch maneuver, offer 'em a cold brew. (or maybe that is your first option)

Sailing lazy .... or not

If I’m steering with my leg over the tiller while I’m sprawled in the cockpit and I can see my trims not very good & I forgot to take a bumper off, I’d let him pass. If I happen to be paying attention to trim and course, and another boat is gaining, I’d fine tune and make him work for the lead. In the informal drag race, I don’t use the usual dirty racing tricks.Later, eh!Ferg

I'd wake up

to find out that it was 0200 and this was just a bad dream. After drying my brow and calming my heart rate I'd drift back to sleep, counting tall masts disappearing astern.

Funny thing

Many years ago, coming into the Galveston jetties, I happened to be the other guy. I was in this little Chrysler 22, getting ready to drop the sails and motor back to the ramp. There had been an offshore race that day, and one of the race boats came in on my starboard side. I already had the little outboard running, but they were slightly in front of me, and couldn't see it. Then I start seeing activity on deck, and I realize these guys are insulted because I am keeping up with them. To make a long story short, we ran the mile or so in, and they are going nuts trying to get away from me. I just reach down and crank in a few more horses every now and then. They never knew.
