What make and model of anchor windlass do you have on your B361? Does if work well? Is it a vertical or horizontal? Was it original equipment? We're getting ready to buy one this spring and any help would be really appreciated! Mark

Vertical windlass

The B361 is designed to have a vertical windlass installed - a Lewmar Concept model was used by the factory. It fits exactly right both below and above deck - there is little extra clearance in either spot, and the channel in the deck for the rode lines up as it should. In fact, there are small marks on the deck that help you line up the template used to drill the holes. There is also a wooden block below deck for mounting the dual-direction solenoid. I just installed a Lewmar V2 on my B361, which has nearly the same foot print and below deck motor, but is a newer design that's gotten nice reviews. It works great - best addition I've made yet. Keep in mind that the deck is over 3" thick where you'll be installing it, so don't even think about your battery drill. You'll also need to use 2awg cable from battery to the bow - I used 40' each way - a not inconsiderable expense. But the installation went well and there were few hitches, just stick with a Lewmar and it'll fit right.

One quick point...

A verical windlass refers to the orientation of the gypsy/drum, not the windlass motor. You will need a vertical windlass that has a horizontal motor below deck. It's the only one that will fit your boat.

Thanks for the input

Randall, Thanks for the input! I have been looking at the Lewmar V3. Do you think that's too much over kill? Does the V2 have enough reserve capacity? We are headed off to the Providence boat show this afternoon to look at them. Thanks, Mark

I'm happy with the V2...

...and my only though on the V3 is that it might not fit either above or below deck. There really is very little tolerance for anything bigger than either the Concept or the V2. The V3 would also require larger cables, etc. The V2 lifts about 1,500# and performs to that capacity. That's alot of ground tackle for a 36' boat. If you use the boat to break the anchor free - and you should -it's plenty of capacity.
