Another Coast Guard rescue this time of a 35 foot sailboat caught in a fishing net. Seas were roughly 7 feet with 25-30 knot winds. The crew had to be air lifted.

While there is not much you can do about a stray fishing net you can at least be well prepared, and equipped, to at least call for help..!

“They didn’t have a radio on board and it was lucky for them that someone saw them and phoned it in.”

What is wrong with people? I would highly doubt any of you guys ever leave the dock without a working VHF. I can't even imagine setting foot on a boat without a VHF or at a minimum a cell phone for coastal & bay sailing.

I dread fishing nets. In many cases they are undetectable. We picked one up on the stb sail drive going from Honolulu to San Fran and I had to go swimming mid ocean to clear it away... It was not a happy time. So, I have a great deal of sympathy for these guys. I hear you about the VHF though.

For some reason the link you have kills my browser, so I have not watched the video and I'm not really commenting on this specific case. Just nets in general.

The fishing nets, crab pots, and the like are an absolute pain in the butt. They have run afoul many a sailor. I dare not motor after dark in my area for fear of snagging a crab pot on my shaft.

Not having a working radio is like being a gunfighter who only uses a knife....it will catch up with you someday soon.

I infer you are equating boat ownership with some level of intelligence. Mutually exclusive things.

I find it hard that they would have a 41' boat without a single VHF or cell phone on it... who doesn't have a cellphone nowadays. :)

Granted, they weren't too far off shore, but going out of the harbor, onto unprotected waters without the basics... just really stupid.

Well

What did we do before VHF :) and handheld VHF because i sure as hell have spent a LOT of time in small sailboats in a LOT of wind without a radio and only have one now because i needed it to call the launch service

Tommays—

I can understand what you're saying.... but to go out nowadays without a radio, when a decent handheld VHF radio is less than $150, is just stupid.

It did not appear that the boat was in danger of sinking.

We've all been through problems, and the first thing we did was think.

We go on forums to learn. We read. We try things. We fail and we succeed.

But we don't punt, not under those circumstances. He's going to have to tell the insurance guy and everyone he know what a complete weenie he is. Why not a tow? The boat becomes a total loss, I am guessing, because I'm afraid to break a nail? I'm going to further guess that they may have made the wrap worse trying to motor out of it. The engine can always fix everything, right?

I did catch a corner of a drift net once in ~ 20 knot conditions. Because we shut the engine down fast, it only took some poking with the boat hook, some tugging, and a 5 minute swim to coax it off the rudder. No big. I also consider a wet-suit to be essential safety gear in cold waters.

There is no reason

There is absolutely no reason for anyone to untie from the dock, with no form of communication aboard. NONE That is just sensless. I would think that anyone sailing in colder waters would also have a wet suit aboard. Hell, I am in Louisiana, where the water only gets down into the 50's in the coldest part of the winter, and is in the 80's in the summer, and I always have a lightweight wetsuit aboard.

I wonder what their actual plans were. Were they just going out of a daysail or more?

I still can't comprehend a 40+foot boat without a radio....that is just odd. Maybe it was fried and not working. I would think that being prepared would be really important even if you were venturing offshore for just the day. Hell, I would feel hinkey about taking my Catalina 30 out in the ocean overnight just because I would be afraid of sudden storms cropping up. At least I would have a working radio and maybe a back-up!

Every time somebody f??/ up the mission is always to talk about how stupid they were and act as If none of us have ever f??/ up

When the reality is we were just lucky and lived and learned through are stupid moments

I am pretty sure we spend MORE time on safety than most with 3 2-1/2 hour crew safety meetings before the boat even touched the water

Are you guys stupid because you never done a REAL MOB because i Know a LOT of people who think you are if have NOT done one

Minimal value

What good is a VHF or cell phone below 40 degrees south latitude and 160 degrees west longitude? Did the pilgrims or columbus have communications? Magellan? The whaling ships?
People have become too dependent on technologis that have only been around for a few years and assume everyone else will bail them out for their lack of preparation and knowledge. We have become totally dependent on electrons in all facets of life so when the power goes out we panic. I'm not suggesting not have a radio cell phone or EPIRB but when your keel falls off and boat is turtled and you are in the middle of the southern ocean you really have problems.
I think a handfull of tacks to ward off the barefoot pirates is just as important.

You might be amazed at where you'll find ship traffic

What good is a VHF or cell phone below 40 degrees south latitude and 160 degrees west longitude?
Bridge to bridge traffic. About 48 hours out off the east coast of New Zealand I called a ship in a crossing situation. Had a nice chat and a stress free cross in a situation where my unstabilized radar made for a very approximate CPA. Having a VHF is a good idea where practical.

Not so sure about Slocum's tacks. The man also had a ghost aboard if you take him completely at his word. And today you're pirates have combat boots and RPG's...

no kidding...every time something like this happens, there is a mad rush to be the first to say how stupid everyone was, long before the facts are in....

yep, some folks are not so bright, especially those that jump to conclusions before all the facts are in...

Real MOBs? I have towed skiers with my cat, and we fall down plenty. I have done MOB in 20 knots dozens of times. You're, correct though, the skill is not easy and is under practiced. I suspect it is particularly easy with cats, and that I am spoiled. But I do know MY situation.

I went for a swim in January (31F water) to recover a sunken rudder assembly, no wet suit. I know how serious that is.

I spent 25 years doing serious mountaineering. Helped carry out one body and several serious injuries. I know about "for keeps."

But if you thing a group post-mortem is pointless, no, that is wrong. We may say some dumb and some plainly insensitive things, but it raises awareness. Kindness to the those parties involved? We do feel concern for them - I think you read the group wronge. The Ocean scares the hell out of us at times.

But let me tell you this about safety meetings. EVERY climber I picked up as dead or injured was wearing a helmet, when that was not often practiced in the areas. They were "safety minded" but did not actually understand safety. They did it "by the numbers" and by the classroom, but did not understand what they were doing. I also see many resucues, both in the mountains and at sea, of people that simply did not pactice or think about contingencies. Yes, things go wrong. And the then there is plan a, b, c, d, e, f.... until one works. That is what we are trying to preach.

Also, never go out with crew that gets frightend. I hear that alot - the family was scared. The kids were scared. I started taking my daugter rock climbing with me when she was little. Oh, she gets scared, and I do too, but what we learn is how to continue to function. People who freeze up when scared... don't take them. I can deal with a scary situation on the boat or in the mountains, but NOT if I have to hand-hold at the same time. The danger is that I will puzzel over what will make them feel better, not what is safe. That they felt safer jumping into the water indicated an altered mental state and perception of the situation.

They gave up fighting.
