We have just recently purchased a 1986 Catalina 36 with a Universel M-25 21HP diesel engine. It is time to change the oil. What is the best oil to use? What brand oil do you like? What wieght oil is best for these diesels? Thanks Bob Emerald Oddysea C-36 #586

oil change

I change the oil once per year or 300 hobs hours which ever comes first. I have been using 10w-40w without a problem. The 25hp Universal engine has a starting problem and I have to hold the pre-heat up to 1min or more before it wants to start. Someone said there is adapter you place near the engine that will reduce this problem????

Check the Manual

Your Manual will have the corect weight of oil in it. Most reccomend straight 30wt or at the most, 10w-30. 10W-40 can break down faster at high heat and compression in some engines and is not reccomended. I think the spec for diesel oils is or was "CD". They changed this a few years ago and I think changed this also. I change oil every 100hrs. or each fall at haul out, whchever comes first.

engine oil

It's a good idea to be consistent with a diesel engine's lubrication. See if there is an old oil container on board from the previous owner. Use whatever they used as long as it matches one of the options in the owners manual. I use SAE 30.
