Inside or out?

If it is exterior and it is cetol you will probably need to remove it down to bare wood and start over if you want to use varnish.

If it is cetol you may be able to do some minor sanding and give it a couple of maintenance coats to bring it back. There is a new version of Cetol that is supposed to look a lot better. Many did not like the orange color on the old stuff.

If you want to go with varnish Epfanies is rated as one of the better exterior products.

I have had excellent results with Epifanes Wood Finish gloss. It is much easier to apply than varnish, and lasts longer and is generally more durable. This is particularly good on deck. Down below nothing can beat traditional Petit Captain's Varnish, but there the Epifanes is not bad, though it doesn't have quite the high gloss. Either one, thin the first few coats especially with some Penetrol, which is also the best stuff for making varnish flow on.

I user Behr from Home depot or Sunbar from Benjamin Moore. Lot's cheaper than anything you will find in a marine store.

One of the big advantages of the Epifanes Wood Finish is that if you don't wait more than 24 hours you can just add coats without sanding, which allows you to build up depth quite easily with less work. Also, in my experience it is a particularly durable finish in terms of abrasion, scratches, and UV. Down below out of the sun the initial coating looked great after 12 years on one boat we owned.

I've used Ace Hardware's Spar varnish for about three years and find it very satisfactory. It's easy to repair damages without having to strip the entire surface, and the price is right at about $15.00 a quart.

Whatever you do, don't even think about Bristol Finish. I can't believe the stuff stays on the market.

Depends upon what you want in a "finish".

The purists will only accept a product like Epiphanes (Ep-eh-fahn-ess) or another high quality varnish and would not be caught dead with Cetol. On the other hand the purists write checks for as much as 30k per year for a professional to do their varnishing and nothing less than 20-25 coats will do with a base of AwlSpar under it all.

On the other than the Cetol product has come a long way, lasts a long time and requires less coats.

I generally use Epiphanes but only have two drop boards to keep up with...:D

Cabot Spar Varnish from Lowes. LOL. Great UV protection and even better when the wood is covered to prevent the sun from shining on it. Not available in California or OTC states.

We are testing this varnish on our cockpit seating for durability this year. 12 months of sun, derrieres and salt should be an adequate test, don't you think?

Maybe, but can you post pictures of the derrieres so we can make an educated decision?:D

Sorry, Ron. :naughty: I only show my derriere to my EX-boss. And that was after I decided he was going to be my ex-boss.
