I have a 1983 H34 with the 25 gallon fuel tank (at least that's what it says on the label still attached to the tank). The tank is made of plastic and I was wondering if anyone knew the exact type of plastic. Is it polypropylene? TIA. Joe Mullee

That is cross-linked polyethlyene.

Joe: Yes, they are polyethlyene. It is different from the water tanks. It is referred to as cross-linked polyethlyene. So you cannot use a water tank! One of our chemists will explain the difference.

Steve's right...

You're correct that plastic fuel tanks must be made of cross-linked PE (polyethylene), which is different from the linear PE used for water and waste tanks. CG regs also dictate how plastic fuel tanks must be designed, made and fitted (types of fittings and locations). So you can't just drop in any ol' plastic water or waste tank to replace a fuel tank or add one. But although you can't convert a plastic water or waste tank to fuel holding, you CAN use a plastic fuel tank to hold water or waste.

Cross-Linked PE or PEX...

...is required to meet fire test regs for fuel system components. The high-temperature properties of the polymer are improved over non linked poly. Adequate strength is maintained to 120-150°C by reducing the tendency to flow. Its chemical resistance is enhanced by resisting dissolution. Its low temperature properties are also improved; its impact and tensile strength, scratch resistance, and resistance to brittle fracture are enhanced. Potable water and waste tanks have no such requirements or safe guards attached.

Follow-Up Question To Steve, Peggy, & Alan

I have cut an access port into my cross-linked polyethlyene diesel fuel tank in order to clean it out thoroughly. I cut the hole big enough to install a plastic Beckson port. It's the screw off type with a clear plate so I can see into the tank. Is there a sealant that will work between the tank and the port and be impervious to the diesel? Again, thanks for any input. Sealant

It is best if you go to an auto parts store, and get a sealant that is used in diesel fuel applications. I did this job about 10 years ago, but I have the sealant on the boat and not handy to tell you what it is. I used only a piece of clear plexiglass, 1/4 inch thick, sealed and bolted to the tank top with 12 self tapping screws, the opening in the tank is large enough to fit your arm in to clean the bottom of the tank completely. When I removed the cover two years ago to check the tank to be sure it was clean, the plexiglass was un effected by the diesel, it was as clear as new. Best of luck on the repair.
