I just got my H26 and I am replacing the jib halyard. I bought the red line from West Marina but did not get the kind that has the spliced shackle. What would be the best type of knot to tie so I will not lose the mast while raising it.
Take your new line and splice a 'long' eye into it. This will allow you to install and remove a shackle whenever you please without having to cut the line. I use them everywhere on my boat.
There are several binding/constrictor knots that you could use: Buntline hitch, halyard knot, bowline, bow string or Hanson knot. When I need a center pull constricting knot I use the bow string knot. The harder you pull on the line the tighter the knot gets. You can't untie it after heavy loading, you would have to cut it off. I also use it on the end of lines I'm threading through blocks, like the main sheet.

Just wondering, are you going to attach your new jib halyard to a shackle or directly to the head of the jib?
Do you have a hank-on jib or a furler?
I'm confused by your comment: ...so I will not lose the mast while raising it.

thanks Paul, I will put a shackle back on it. I have a furler that uses the halyard to raise it. I use the halyard to attach to the gin pole to raise the mast. That is my worry is that while raising the mast, it will come loose and my mast will come down. ds
