We just bougt an H31 and want to buy a good hand held GPS. We cruise Washington (Seattle area) and Columbia river (Oregon). I am looking at a Garmin 12map or IIIplus. Any others in the 3-400$ range I might consider? Thanks

I'm buying a Garmin 175

I already have a Garmin 12XL which works fine but we would like some chart help as well so we are buying a Garmin 175 which is their largest handheld. We sail the San Juans and Gulf all the time and think this will be a good addition. Les

I also highly recommed the 175. In addition to all the obvious virtues, it's idiot-proof which, for me, is a crucial consideration particularly when entering waypoints easily pulled off the maps. These can easily be had for $400 or less on eBay brand new, some with options.

Garmin 175

I have a Garmin 175 and it has been very good. It was extremely helpful in the fog in Elliott Bay area last year. It has more whistles and bells than you would ever need, but the basic charting is excellent.

Hand held

Since you said hand held, the only way to go is a Garmin GPS 48 Russ Her Diamond Ring

GPS-48

We have a Hunter 31 also and purchased the Garmin GPS-48 and have really liked the functions. It doesn't have the map like the GPS-III but it works great and provides excellent navigational data. Enjoy...but handheld, like this one over the rest. ...Larry...

Map or non-map?

That't basically your decision (along with cost, of course...) As far as handhelds, I agree with the gentlemen: Garmin 48 or 175
