What type of cooking fuel does your boat have?

I have a 1986 C-36 that has a CNG stove. When I started checking into converting to Propane, (thinking it was a better way to go since it is what new boats have) I found out how much safer and better CNG cooks than propane or Alcohol. So why do most new boats come with propane instead of the safer CNG? I have heard that CNG is the most popular offshore (outside the US) fuel. If All boats came with CNG, CNG access would become more readily available in the US. Lets face it, Natural Gas is what all our homes use, it is cheap, safer than propane in an enclosed environment like a boat, cooks best and is readily available. What kind of fuel does your boat have? What kind do you wish it had? Bob C-36 Emerald Oddysea

My C30 has alcohol. Dangerous flare-ups. Wish I had CNG...

CNG

I have CNG on my C-38. I had propane on my last boat. I am very happy with the CNG the little I have used it, and the advantages of CNG over propane or alcahol would make me wonder why anyone would switch to a different fuel. Craig Steinkraus Wings C-38 #250

Propane

I converted from alcohol to propane. I would have installed CNG if I'd been able to find a used system. I found a good deal on a used but almost new propane stove first. I've heard that CNG is unavailable in many areas.

Alcohol, and I LIKE it!

My 1983 Cat 30, uses pressurized alcohol. I hear may people mention "dangerous flare ups" all the time. I've never had one of these. I think the key to using the alcohol is to really preheat the bejesus out of it. I actually LOVE my alcohol stove. Finding alsohol is SO easy, it's everwhere...

Origo Alcohol

But I have a 27 and installing a propane system is pretty much out of the question for me. I used to have pressurized alcohol which I hated & bought the passive Origo & love it! It heats water very quickly but the fuel is fairly expensive in the grand scheme of things. LaDonna

Origo Alcohol also and LaDonna...

Hi, just visiting from the Hunter site. I have an Origo Alcohol also. It came with the boat. I’ve been completely satisfied with the little unit. The potholders work well even in real rail down conditions and the normal rock and roll associated with a Hunter 23. HOW come no one has mentioned the "smell" associated with the over grown fondue pot heaters. And La donna, I saw your mom's web site. Will she consider commission work? Greg H23 -Faster

I used to have a Primus alchol stove in my Cat30 The sucker took about 4 hours to boil a cup of water. Aftefr a 154.00 bothched repair job went down to Sears and bought a Coleman stove for 54 bucks. turned around and bought a 10.00 propane adapter and now Its possible to burn unleaded, coleman fuel, or propane. Granted, this unit is not marine grade, but it fit almost perfectly in my old spot, and for general purpose its a fine low cost alternative. The difference for me is great. I would like to clarify that the propane bottles are the little green coleman ones that are used for most of their proudcts. The propane bottles come in cases at some hardware store.Just be careful to vent properly and check for any leaks I had it for over a year with no problems...
