Can't find with a search, but was it
kerosene that works to clean the exterior
of the engine? Also, under the batteries
next to the engine is pretty black. Would
kerosene work on that? or what else would you
suggest? Soap and water doesn't cut it
and I'm allergic to Simple Green.
Maybe it was on another forum.

You will have a very difficult time getting rid of the kerosene smell. Find someone else to clean with simple green for you.

Couple decades ago before switching to Simple Green I used a citrus based degreaser that worked well and was benign for the environment and skin, don't recall it as having much of an odor either. Try a search for Orange engine degreaser.

We ( I mean... I) clean engines with a product called "Grez Off". No Petroleum odor + works great. Maybe give this a try?
