Over the winter I plan on replacing the carpet like material that is on the walls in my cabin of my 23.5. HDoes anyone know of a good material to use for this? How should I remove the old and what to use to apply the new material? Thanks for the help

The easiest thing to do is to repalce what you have with the same type of material. SailCare handles this product.
You need to peel the old stuff off and then scrape off the residule stuff. The you can reapply the new material with spray contact cement (follow directions).
You will want to be sure that you mask off the area so the overspray does not get into the rest of the boat. I would put a fan over the forward hatch to exhaust any fumes and overspray too.

"Monkey fur" was all the rage in the '80s...but not since then. It collects dirt, odors...nothing much but carpet shampoo can be used to clean it...which are all the reasons why he wants to replace it!
I'd peel it off, then sand the surface smooth and install vinyl wall covering--the kind that's like old fashioned "oil cloth," available from any good paint and wallcovering store....I bought it, along with everything else I needed, from Sherwin-Williams...who also provided instructions to do it right. Go with a heavily textured off white that has flecks of a neutral tan or even navy or whatever color goes with the boat in it to give it some "depth"...it'll make the boat seem bigger and also update it. And, will be easy to keep clean.

Several years ago, I pulled the carpet out of the V-berth and replaced with Luan Plywood strips. I bought some 4'x4' sheets of 3/16 or 1/4" luan from HD or Lowes and cut into 3 or 4" planks. Stained with red oak stain ( close to the existing teak color) and put about 3 coats of polyurethane on all sides. It is cheap plywood so it had to be sealed. I used liquid nails adhesive and glued in place . I used my extending boat hook and a similar painting pole to apply pressure against the boards when set in place - braced to the opposite side. After dried, I would add another row or two. It's been at least 6 or 7 years and I just replaced 2 of the boards due to the polyurethane bubbling up. This had only recently become an issue on a couple of boards which Ieasily replaced. If I did it again, and I do intend to pull the carpet in the aft area soon, I would probably get solid planks milled thin and flexible and mount the same way. The luan has held up nicely, considering the few years of neglect after Katrina though.
The boat is a 94 and is in good shape, I just want to replace it because I am getting all new interior cushions and it stinks inside.
