What To Paint First

I am in the middle of painting the bottom with Interlux VM 17 and I also need to re-paint the boot stripe with Interlux Brightside . One of the previous owners painted the boot stripe right to the bottom paint, with out the usual gap between them. I know sometimes when you put masking tape on fresh paint; the paint will come off with the masking tape. I have about 3 weeks till launch. What would you think I should paint first? I am thinking the bottom because it dries much faster then Brightside paint. For sure I will have at least one week of drying time between paintings. By the way this is all happening in Michigan where it might be 65 today and 30 with snow tomorrow. Thanks Pat

My experience

I used to do the bottom first and then the waterline. The tape did pull off some of the bottom paint, but it never seemed to be a problem and least my waterline looked good. I used 3M fine line. If you choose to go the opposite- and it might work better - I would stay with the fine line tape as the adhesive seems to not be as strong, thus the risk of pulling off paint is lessened. I am not the expert here, but this is what has worked for me.

Generally you work from the top down...

It's better to have a bit of bottom pain on top of boot stripe paint, than the other way around. Black or dark boot stripes show less dirt.

tape

If you run masking tape across you pant leg once if will take some of the sticky off so it will be less likely to lift the paint.

Rob in Oshkosh raising the waterline

Pat--am interested in the procedure to raise the waterline. How did you ensure accuracy or did you wag it? Thanks.

Craig in VB

Craig- I had 1" of hull color below my boot stripe. I just eliminated that and painted and prepped for the bottom paint. Rob Hessenius
