What to mount on the bulkhead?

We have done a few modest changes to our 2018 35.1. One part we have not yet changed is mounting anything on the main cabin bulkhead (see below). On either side of the large opening to the forward cabin there is a good amount of area begging to be used. Big clock? Bookshelves? Magazine holders? Suggestions?

I tend to think we need more space to store food, especially fruit and breads. Anything to do that?

I know I will not be able match the color of the bulkhead. In that case, what works better? A slightly different shade of brown, or black, or something else?

BTW, the picture was taken before we purchased the boat, so we don't have the same cushions and such in the boat.

A clock, visible from the cockpit, high and out of the way. A fire extinguisher and a smoke alarm, also high and out of the way. After that, shelves and some nice artwork.

My B323 has a 12v Hella fan on each side of the door, plus one on the VEE cabin side, bolted to the salon fan. Mount them high enpugh so you can still lean back against the bulkhead. My dealer just tapped into the cabin lights for power. Maybe also some clear plastic shelves for CDs? I have seen some boats with squares of foamed and carpeted or upolstered squares of wood bolted to the wall to lean back against.

TV: Well, we use a 12" iPad for watching stuff. Works good enough and we can move it around easy.

Moosehead: That would add more places to hang hats....

Rodney: No. Just no.

Fans: We have two battery powered fans that last easily eight hours. They also are recharged by USB, so if we can place one near an outlet we plug it in.

Safety stuff: We have two fire extinguishers aboard, mounted in readily accessible spots. And a combination smoke/CO detector.

My wife has said she would like a nautical clock and barometer. I guess Weems & Plath is the place to look for those. (The clock will be non-striking.)

That’s what we put there.

W&P customer service is great as the other ongoing thread says. The movements on their tide clocks aren’t that reliable through; we’ve had to use their customer service for that. Supposedly their regular clock movements without the tide hand are better, or maybe the tidal ones have improved.

Don't want to burst your bubble on the W&P clock.... But I received one as a gift. It is battery operated. Been warranty replaced twice. They do stand behind their product... but is a PIA to take advantage of the warranty.

I thought the same thing but it gives you some ideas. That is on a FB page devoured to sailboat interiors.

Your bulkhead is refreshingly barren.

I've taken more stuff off than I've mounted on the main bulkheads, since I've owned this boat. The bulkhead is full of holes from gizmos and junk that has come in and out of fashion in the last 60 years.

Bookshelves, if they have a high enough fiddle are always useful. Books change day to day and season to season and you could use them for extra foodstuffs and misc while onboard. Useful additional storage space for a boat.

We have an old barometer that still works (fun). I have mounted an old beach art piece our son put together years ago (I covered some existing mounting holes).

In season as we coastal cruise, various photos, maps and artwork are temporarily mounted with tape, (just painters tape which easier to remove).

Some art that makes you happy. The starboard side can be for a clock/barometer, etc. For the art on my boat, I use Command Strips which do not harm the wood and hold very well.

I used to be at L & M docks at HHN until they moved me to put in the new haul-out bay. You might not need as much storage as you'd think, but of course that may plan on where you will go. When I looked at the B323 and 343, it was clear the 343 had more galley storage, but the 323 had the head that is often called "That's not a "head", that's a "Bath Room". So I got the 323. Sitting and looking over the boat alot, I found ways to make storage. I had 4 people for 16 days doing a DelMarVa circumnavigation. Making for more storage before that trip, storage was not a problem. Look around- you'll find storage is already there.

I have a (analog) clock and barometer on the starboard side bulkhead. The clock is nice because I can see it from the helm, and I always take a look when I depart and when I return. I know the time is available on many gadgets such as the GPS, my phone, etc., but the analog display sticks in my mind and I can take a quick glance while underway and decide if I have time to head off in another direction before heading back.

I have thought about putting up a screen of some sort, but so far no. The port side bulkhead is largely covered up by the door to the v-berth.
