Dream Boat South Jersey
Hi Folks,

I've recently stumbled upon the opportunity to purchase a crazy-inexpensive Oday Javelin with a trailer.

I'm fairly (very, very) new to the world of sailing, and I think a 14 footer would be a great boat on which to learn. The problem is that I don't have any experience in inspecting a prospective purchase.

Can you folks give me some pointers on what to look for? I understand Javelins tend to have some scary transom rot, and I'll definitely be poking about for that, but is there anything else I should do? Have any links to "sailboat shopping for idiots" websites?

Thanks so much!

5hortBu5,

I learned to sail in a Javelin on N. Wis lakes as well as Lake Michigan when I was about 16 - 17. Along with the known transom rot issues on the Javelin, you may want to check the standing rigging for broken strands. Those are easily replaced if needed. Check the general condition of the sails and sheets so you have an idea of what you are getting. Not such a good deal if the sails are in bad shape, but then you are not buying a racing boat either. The cable the hauls up the centerboard may be something to look at but again the should be relatively easy to replace if it is frayed. Good solid boat and we certainely gave it a beating. It has a farily high bow and will easily plow through any moderate chop you may encounter. Have Fun!

I remember finding website or blog about a year ago that had a detailed series of pictures of a guy that rebuilt his transom on a Javelin. This website has a good bit of info on the Javelin http://www.odayjavelin.com/
