Assuming you have space behind it, try something like this:
Its always nice to have a place to store critical things like your cellphone or keys.

How about one of those stainless steel fold up, fold down drink holders?

Some good ideas. I'm hoping not to have to make the holes much larger. Maybe something that covers the holes. I have tape over them now. It won't last.

If you are still looking for something to just cover the hole(s), we faced this same dilemma. I went to the big box stores looking for those plates you put on sheetrock wall to protect them from doorknobs (tenants are not always careful). Didn't really find what I wanted - everything was too small, too thick, too thin. Also tried electrical cover plates, same issues. So I tried thinking outside the box. Walking around one day, I saw a package of something like this, but in white:

There were four in a package for about $8 IIRC. About 4" across. I just removed the rubberized foam part, and used the plate only. Glued it in place, and voila! Cheapest fix on the whole boat. I was able to use the others later to mount small reading lights to, when the fixtures were too small for the existing (OEM) holes.
