Do you keep old (1999 vintage) VHF radios on board when you replace it with one of the new AIS/GPS models?
What do you do with an older functioning radio?

eBay. I've sold a couple of them. Won't get much, maybe $40 or $50.
Donate to a local sailing school.
Set them up as a base station in a yacht club.
Take them to an electronics recycler.
Keep them as a back up.

AIS is not necessarily a VHF radio function. My Raymarine MFD can use a separate AIS module.

As far as a VHF radio function, I have enjoyed the DSC and MMSI functions. For a Real story for MMSI...

At least in my area, AIS has limited use. I am going to bet that AIS will soon be an APP on you iPhone, to link to your MFD.

When I bought my boat, it came installed with 2008 VHF noted in above link. Guess What?
The PO left his old VHF on the boat, tucked away.

Using a simple ≈$20 VHF antennae, I gave the vintage VHF (1998) to my son-in-law to use on his 40' power boat. He thought his iPhone was good enough. He didn't know he was not within USCG regs for off shore boating.

You can always put it in the SBO classifieds. Btw I walked the dock today and your boat looked fine.

The three most popular AIS apps.... Boat Beacon, Ship Finder, Marine Traffic... are compared in this article.
These apps are internet based. While AIS is intended for ship to ship VHF communication.... land based VHF stations can receive the signals and upload to an internet server. So be aware that there are limitations in that regard. The article explains it all.

WRONG. Don't do this.

Very illegal and the FCC and Coast guard are totally humorless about this.

Interesting. A local USCG AUX CG wanna be has a marine radio installed in his truck, along with the associated 8' whip drilled into the side of his truck bed. Always transmitting. Said person is an embarrassment to all the fine AUX folks.
On another note...I always hear the locals on marine 18...while deep in the UP woods.

As DL says they DO licence them for on-land use, but in limited cases and ONLY in fixed locations. The yahoo in the pickup truck is way off base. As are all the Yooper bear hunters that use them back at the dump.

I'll take it. Gotta be no older than my 1986 Standard Horizon. Wait, I never use that one either! Now that I'm in bigger waters, though, my hh won't be as usable for transmitting.
