What To Do About Possible Lighting Strikes

I purchased a 1988 Legend 37 which sustained a lighting strike and caused a fire. I am in the process of fixing the boat up for next season. I believe the mast is 59' tall which would make it the tallest or one of the tallest in the harbor. I need, so it won't happen again, install some type of lighting surpressor on the mast. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what, how it should be done. The mast is down for the winter so I guess that now is the time to get it done. Thanks, Mickey

Check Archives

About 2-3 months ago, there was a lot of discussion about suppressors and strikes. You will probably find it in the archives. Also, I beleive the 37 came equipped with grounding wiring. Mine has wiring in the bilge around the keel bolts. To be honest with you, I have never traced the wirinf to see where it goes.

Lightning

Michael, I have a 430, with a sixty five foot mast, and live in Florida, the lightning capital of the world, or something like that. We've now had the boat for three years, and in the marina where we dock, we have the tallest mast there. The boat is equipped with a "No Strike" device, and we haven't had a bit of trouble, although two other boats in the marina have had strikes. I understand the oil rigs in the Gulf have the device installed, as do some of the bigger, and more expensive power boat companies. The claim is that the device also keeps away elephants, and I guess that's true, because we haven't had any problems with them Pete Burger KAILANI

Research References

Cruising World magazine has published several articles on this subject. They can be researched at their website; www.cruisingworld.com. I believe Practical Sailor has also tested and written up resuslts on lighting suppressors.

Mike.... You're not alone

I also have a Legend 37 (87') that was hit by lightning(at the dock in 88'). Fortunately we did not have any fires or structural damage. We were on board at the time and did not even know we were hit... but we knew it had to be close. All the electronics blew(with the exception of the engine starter motor and stereo) but that was about all. We did not have the tallest mast there but had to be one of the tallest. Have not had any problems with ligntning since and not installed any type of protection device either.

To Pete Burger - elephants :)

Does that thing also keep away crows? I have a 37, also, and the crows keep landing on the arm of my wind speed anemometer. Of course, they drop nearly everything on the deck and dodger - poop, berries, nuts, etc. I guess I'm just glad we don't have elephants up here in New England :)
