456 CC in San Diego? My wife and currently own 30' Catalina and want to move up to a Hunter 456 CC in a few years and live on board while we refit for a move to Costa Rica. Is it even possible to find a live aboard slip, a 45 foot slip in San Diego? Do I need to get on a list now at marinas? Thanks on any info. CW

San Diego Slips

It is not hard to find a slip in San Diego, but the city is attempting to reduce the number of liveaboards in the harbor and mission bay, with the hopes of improving water quality. You may need to get on waiting lists for liveaboard status.

live aboards in San Diego

I was checking for live aboard slips in San Diego for a friend and found that it is almost impossible. Some marinas charge a huge fee in addition to the regular slip fee. Some marinas don't allow them at all. An earlier posting states the city is trying to reduce them and that's correct. I think the city rule is a max of 10% of the slips for each marina, and all have reached that max long ago. Hence, there are long waiting lists. Chula Vista has strict rules and is one area that charges high rates for live aboards. Those who live aboard close to my slip tell me about "sneak-aboards". Some marinas even have a method of checking when you even stay one night aboard, allowing 4 nights a week, but no more to cut down on "sneak-aboards". Good luck.

That town hasn't changed then,,,

We passed through (for a month) in 91. It was awful then too. And the rules were so bad that the harbor police were behind bullet proof glass in their 'fort'. Hey Chip, How about coming up here? Our marina (Brownsville WA) likes liveaboards. Adds to security and all that stuff.

It's hard to say "stuck" in San Diego because of

the year round good sailing and my job. We planed on living onboard and hopefully paying off or coming close to it, the 45 foot Hunter before we left for Costa Rica or our exit south from San Diego. We were hoping to live onboard for 2 years and then I would retire, maybe a bit early. So moving and quitting my job would not make sense. Although…. Chip
