What Size internal raw water strainer for M25?

My 1985 Catalina 30 has a Universal M25 engine. I don't know if it ever had a strainer on the raw water intake. From the short haul I know there is not an external strainer on the seacock, and there is no internal strainer either.

QUESTION: Besides the hose size, is there anything to determine which strainer to get? We added an A/C, and it's strainer mounts to a bulkhead and the hose is horizontal. I saw pictures in another forum post which showed a strainer attached to the seacock and the hose out the top, with the clear part horizontal.

I want to add a strainer soon, as when we opened the old 2" exchanger after putting in an upgraded 3" one, it was full of grass and debris.

Thank You

My seacock, hose and all fittings are 3/4, so I can't really change the size. When I looked in West Marine the size of the strainer itself varied quite a bit. All are made so you add the correct fitting size, so the main question is how big a strainer to get. Some pictures I've seen make it look like their strainer is pretty small.

Also, can you mount them so the water flow is vertical instead of horizontal?

Thanks

I don't honk the groco will do that and I see no need to as the sediment needs to be in the bottom as much possible

I think you'll find the system flow is limited by the inlet and outlet on the pump. Anything larger for the strainer should work OK. I can't see a horizontal mounting. I just went to the 3 inch exchanger myself. Much greater volume.
