I currently own a '87 31. Does anyone know how much of the power is is generated by the headsail? Also, what size headsail would give me maximum performance? I mostly use the boat for crusing, but enjoy particapiting in the club regata's. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Headsail

John, I don't own a h31 but do have a fractional rig S & S designed Tartan 33. My boat was designed for a 135% headsail. Recently installed a new 155% headsail and I can tell you the the performance upgrade is dramatic. I still use the 135% in winds over 15 knots and have the 155% for wind below 15 knots. My recommendation is that you have 2 headsails just for that purpose. Believe you will also notice a pleasing upside is performance and flexibility. Good luck.

155 %

Having a 28.5 the head sail is a big part of the driving force of this sail plan. If you sail in an area where you use a 110 only a few times a year then the 155 will be what you want. If at a later time you think you need a 135 get it then. Even on Lake Erie on the Great Lakes the 155 is the sail of choice. I have a 108 Blade jib 2 season old and we have used it twice. Don't listen to advice that a 135 will be just fine on those 10 knot and under wind days you will want all the sail area you can get. Also buy a good racing sail if you are doing any racing at all. I feel UK Tape Drive's offer the best sail at not a North 3DL price. If you go with a Dacron you will not be as competitive as you would like. Sail's are the engine of the boat and if you want to be in the front of the fleet then having your boat Race ready (good sail's, fast bottom) will be the key. Also the credit they give you for not having a folding prop is not worth it. So Fast Sail's, Fast Bottom, Folding Prop and then the rest is sailing in the right direction. Cliff H 28.5 "Red Dog"
