I want to replace my main halyard. The size of ther current one appears to be 1/2". I'd like to go down to 7/16". My friend with a Catalina 34 had 3/8" and went UP to 7/16". His mast is 2' shorter than mine. Does anyone have any advice or experience to share ??

Gene, Hunter has this information. They will provide you with size and length. Then, check with Seco South in Largo FL for prices. They supply Hunter with line and are excellent to work with. Ask for Jean. I've used them three times for halyards. http://www.secosouth.com/mrs.asp John Richard s/v Jack's Place

I use 7/16" for the main halyard

My original Vision32 hunter owners manual calls for 115' of 7/16" for the main halyard, and 83' of 3/8" for the jib halyard. My boat originally had 1/2" for the main halyard as well, but I changed it back to 7/16" when I replaced all the halyards. I think 7/16" is good. The only argument I could think of for having the larger line is that it might be easier on the hands, but that isn't really a concern I share. Good luck! matt

My halyards...

...are all 3/8 and my mast is taller than the V32. If you ask Hunter, you will get the standard answer. What is most important about your halyards is, are they strong enough? and how much do they stretch? Strong low stretch halyards cost more than the standard double braid stuff and do a far better job. Also smaller diameter line has less turning friction which means easier hoisting and drops.

...re: friction. FWIW, I just changed my main halyard from 1/2 Sta-Sat X to 3/8 Spectra. It is spectra core double-braid and I did my own splice. For me, the key was to get rid of the friction w/o adding stretch. Jib halyard is next. I had a Vision 32 and know that you do get lots of halyard friction. It was kinda funny with the eye-splice. I downloaded splicing directions for core-dependent line. It is a little different. I had it all done according to the directions before milking the cover back, and for the life of me, I just could not see the geometry. But, it came out fine. Anyone care to take a ride to the top?
