we are going to buy a folding prop for our 1988 285 first. Does anyone have any favorite brand or advise? Also, what size? We have a 2001 9hp Volvo Penta Diesel. Thanks for any advice. Cindy

Autoprop

Can't tell you what size you need but any prop dealer should have the specs on your boat. As for what brand, I love the Autoprop on our 361. No worries about repitching it, just regular replacement of the zinc and lubrication of the bearings. Drives her very nicely when under power but cuts drag under sail. There's a big difference between a stock prop and the feathering in how she handles at low speed. There's much greater prop bite and walk with the Autoprop. I use both to my advantage while docking or manuevering in close quarters. Running at hull speed is never a problem regardless of conditions. No doubt you'll get a variety of opinions on this one but no matter which one you choose I'm certain you'll be much happier with it over the stock prop. Mike

On line sources

If you go to an on-line soource like PYI Inc with your boat size, engine, shaft size, and your transmission gear ratio, they can give you a recommended propeller appropriate for your boat. There is a good article on propellers in this month's issue of Sail Magazine that compares several manufacturer's folding and feathering props. They are obviously in a wide range of price categories depending on size and type. They are probably all very good applications, and everyone is going to have their own preference, depending on needs.

folding prop

well, I don't know if I did the right thing ( hope so), I ordered the stock folding prop that goes on this boat, directly from Beneteau. They had one in stock, and the price was good. So I guess my question now is, does anyone have the stock folding prop, and is it good? Thanks

Didn't know Benny had them

I didn't know Beneteau had them but if it's like everything else they stock you should be in good shape.

folding prop

I was surprised too, and that the price was very reasonable. It is a French brand, Eliche Roche. I am just hoping I am happy with the results. The rest of this board seems anti folding. Do you have a folding prop? We club race and hope this was a wise decision. Cindy

We have an Autoprop

Yes we have an Autoprop but not because we race. I wanted to have a prop that would provide me with good drive when under power and minimal drag under sail. I chose the Autoprop because, unless they goofed things up, I didn't have to worry about setting the proper pitch. I've run other boats with standard props and there is definately a difference in performance. I wouldn't be without one. Note that there are a number of brands out there and based on what I've read and heard from other owners they'll all out perform a fixed prop. Mike
