I just purchased a Chrysler 8hp engine for my Cat 22. It is a short shaft. Is that Ok for this boat. Thanks in advance. Mark

outboard

My 79 Catalina 22 came with a 7.5 hp Chyrsler long shaft. It pushed the boat very well under ALL conditiions. It is now up on the rack for "servicing". In the mean time I have been using my "backup" outboard, a Nissan 3.5 hp short shaft. In calm water it works great and pushes me along at 3.5 mph mid throttle (according to GPS!). Great for getting out to the bay and back in. HOWEVER, that short shaft ain't no good if there is bad chop on the bay as it either comes out of the water or almost drowns the motor especially if the waves are coming from astern. So under these conditions, windy, I have to use the sails (darn!!). The little 3.5 hp actually works better for me as it is light (28 lbs) and easy to remove when I park the boat. But you see the limitations.

Chrysler engine

The 8 Chrysler should work fine except you will wish for a long shaft. I had been using a Sears 7-1/2 air cooled short shaft with only forward and neutral. It pushed the boat fine but was the pits having to twirl the engine around to back down. I just recently bought a 10hp electric start Chrysler and haven't had it to the water yet. I did immediately take it to the former Chrysler dealer here in Oklahoma to get the water pump serviced. Glad I did that because the impeller was brittle and the housing was corroded. There are web sites where you can buy the extension kit to make it long shaft. I can give you my dealers name and phone number if you get in a tight for parts. He seems to be very well stocked and is reasonable. He was very complimentary on Chrysler engines and said that they always ran and started fine and didn't cause much trouble if you used good quality oil, the right mixture and fresh fuel. I know that this one sure runs smooth.

Outboard for 22

Mark; There will come a time when you will wish you had a four-stroke longshaft for the quieter running, better fuel economy, (read better range) and no hassle with oil mixing, so if you can swing it, why not do it now? I had a Honda 7.5 on my 22.
