I am trying to decide between an 8# and a 4# for use mostly in sand on the great south bay of Long Island. What are you other 170 owners using?

Don't know about 170's

Most suppliers (West Marine) will offer a selection chart. The selection for your boat will be based on the length and gross weight of your boat. 8# is right for a 17 foot, but buy a 12#. The price will be worth the piece of mind. For sand bottom, soft or hard, a fluke anchor would be the best. You could use a folding grapple anchor. It would be easier to store onboard and have good holding capability. Ground tackle is a very important piece of equipment even for a trailer boat.

Forget the folding grappnle!

I tried the folding grappnle for the same storage reasons described. Not only did it not hold, it broke the second time I used it. Fortunately, I got a kind soul at West Marine who gave me a full refund. I replaced it with a fluke. Tougher to store, but it keeps me from moving! Chuck Watery Tart

They can be quickly disasembled if space is an issue http://www.defender.com/category.jsp?path=-1|10391&id=33872 http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|10391|33872|10392&id=66310

Danforth-style 8 lb.

I use a West Marine danforth-style (similar in design to aforementioned Fortress 7) 8 pounder on our 170. Grabs great and is fairly easy to manage and store in the front storage nook. It has 15' of chain and 150' rode. Like I'll every need that much line!
