I just purchased 36 catalina and I would like to install an ac unit. What size do I need? One dealer stated that I need at least 16,500btu.

I think your dealer is right. You need that much during the heat of the day in summer in order to cool down and remove humidity. No unit can bring the temp down much more that 20 degrees below ambient. And the deck is not insulated so the sun's heat will keep working on your interior.
I recommend you join the C36 International Association and join their message board. They've "been there done that" on YOUR particular boat. www.c36ia.org I peruse this board and our C34 and C36 message boards, too. Learn a lot from each of them.
Definetly no smaller than 16500 and that may struggle some when the sun is beating on the boat at mid day.
