Ok, so after looking around it looks like maybe a Cape Dory 30? Now, what is so much boat doing around so little water?

It's a Lancer 28. There were two, one (not this) was deep keel. This was the trailerable one. Look it up in Google Images. There was also a 25. Nice (and rare) boat. If I recall correctly, the guys who started it were formerly of Columbia Yachts.

Thanks everyone. A Lancer 'ey? Columbia Yachts sounds like a good boat. When I checked the transom, there were two chain plates, and one was bisecting the HIN. I'll take another look, but, well, ...

I dare not go too near because when I get too close to a boat for sale it comes home with me. It always starts the same way, "just have a look." But then I find a way to rationalize inquiring about the price, "for a friend." Then I start saying things like, "the price is really low", followed by, "hey - he said he'll take <price-x>, and I can just fix that!" Now I'm in a world of pure imagination, where everything is possible. It's like a f***n Willy Wonka movie! It's an unstoppable force and little by little every thought is consumed by it, and now I'm fighting off all opposing opinions until dammit, I'm writing a check! God help me.

This is the boat owner's forum, right?
Is there a section for boat-a-holics?
"...my name is G. It's been 6 weeks since I bought my last boat..."

Early Lancers were OK boats; well built and decent designs. IIRC the 30 uses old C&C molds, not a bad thing. Most of Lancer's crappy reputation was earned after the company was sold in 83 to Bally. They were only interested in money and the boats after that were crap.

"She showed up for sale behind the saloon not far from me."

Behind a saloon is probably a good place to sell an old boat.

Jackdaw, I owe you a beer on that response sir. AS a former dealer, I just learned never to be negative unless it is a safety issue with me as I had seen so much out there for years.

Thanks for the info and the heads up. That keel is huge and I noticed a 6"h x 12"w section near the bottom that appeared wet, but not wet above or adjacent. I'm thinking slow seepage, and I've learned enough from these posts to run-away! Yeah, the place is called Renegade's Saloon. Two beer kinda place, one to drink, one to throw. The street out front is criss-crossed from bike burn-outs, yet most of the smoke is inside. I guess if I had a bike I'd be layin' down some rubber there too. Thankfully never had that compulsion. Ha! Thanks again!

I like my '85 Lancer and do not think it is crap. It has a very thick hull and no blisters were ever found. So I would say that they did a pretty good job at building this boat in '85.

We like our '75 Lancer 25. Not a performer but fairly stiff in "normal" winds and more accommodations than most 25 footers. Great for coastal cruising plus we can anchor where motorboats fear to tread. The keel is 20" wide at the hull because it's a walking area giving this little girl nearly 6' of headroom. If the boat is a good price, I'd consider it,
