i am slowly redoing my hunter 37 cutter (1982) after having refurbished my hunter 27 (1983) i am trying to make the cushions more comfortable than they currently are and womndered did the original cushions on the 37 cutter have a slight "V" shape when viewed from the side as the 27 cushions did?? any thoughts or comments on the cushion would be appreciated although those i added to the 27 cost an arm and two legs going from production (low quality) foam of 3' to top quality foam of 5-6" made a WORLD of difference i used an automotive fabric for covering and they turned out great of course the 27 does not have the issue of the double starboard bunk that the 37 cutter has... but i did make complete back cushions for the salaon berths which nicely covered storage i also made a vertical plywood brace for the helmsman sitting on the port quarterberth of the 27 any thoughts or help would be appreciated the previous owner did a great job on the v berth mattress... but did not coordinate all of the berths with finished matching covering found in the salon so far i am contemplating simply covering the v berth and recovering the salon berths as well as reconfiguring the salon berths if as i suppose the salon berths were indeed in the shape of a V to hold rear ends in place i will also make the port quarterberth on the 37 cutter match the rest of the cushion work and will increase the thickness of this foam up to 5-6" thanks all for the wonderful help on this forum

Don't think you need to increase foam thickness.

I do not think you need to increase the foam thickness. You need to use the proper type of foam. One method is to bond to foams together. If you use a higher density foam for the bottom (ie 1 inch) and then use a 3" piece of Latex on top of that you will have a good sleeping bunk. Seating cushions and sleeping cushions need to have different foam configurations. I would not "Taper" the cushion back in the salon. These back cushions are used to make the sleeping berth in the salon and would not be very good to sleep on. I would defer to a professional that makes cushions for boats on how to configure the different cushion types.

special situation due to handicap

not trying to be tacky about this...BUT i am very very sensitive to seat height etc because of arthritis and the current 37 c cushions redone by the previous owner have a gradual oval with the center of the cushion looking sideways being the highest i really doubt if the cushions were done that way and these tend to be either uncomfortable to sit on or tend to throw you towards the center of the cabin unlike a lot of people i probably notice tiny things here because of illness even choosing between a normal height and high head is important to me i think i am going to just go on and do it thanks for the help
