Took these pictures in the harbor last week. It seems the guy with the Tartan 34 has had trouble with birds in the past so he rigged up some used car flags. It's a nice look (if it worked)... Unfortunately they don't phase the Osprey. A few weeks ago he tore apart a Striped Bass on top of my bimini and damn near ruined it! When is Osprey season???

I hear they taste just like chicken... Oh, pleeease. It's just a joke. Don't turn me in to the endangered species police....

Catches fish and repels birds

PK (Pre-Katrina)Biloxi had many restaurants and bars with dock or patio seating. To keep gulls from sharing the patrons' food, all the out-door eating establishments had monofilament line strung linearly (not as a grid) with about a 2 foot separation between lines that were about 7 feet above the dining area. Worked great on gulls. Happy sails *_/), MArk

Birds

A friend of mine recently bought a boat in the Tampa area. Birds were pretty bad around his marina, but he had a couple of twisted plastic pieces. Kind of shiny, and looked more like a wind chime than a bird repeller. Whatever, they seemed to work. His handle on this board it sailortonyb. You might get him to send you a pic, as he is a pretty good guy.

I have seen CDs...

Spinning in the wind at my Marina. Do they work? I don't know, but it sure looks cool. Guess you need to find out what the natural enemy of an osprey is and put a few of those on the boat.

Simple Fool Proof Solution

I bought a roll of fruit tree netting. A simple tie at each end of the backstay, boom, awning, whatever. It blows in the wind and absolutely no birds will go near it no matter how big or small. Sometimes use it on the bow aswel. Turns especially like to hang out on the bow rails, but not when this netting is in place. :)

Fake Snake

I've seen a few people put rubber/plastic fake snakes on their boat. It seems to work wonders with keeping the birds away.

Ospreys eat snakes. How can a 3 foot

snake scare a ten pound sea hawk? Bald eagles scare ospreys but not much else does.

I just can't believe this site...killing birds how

can you even think about it. What kind of people are you? Rich, Rodney, Joe, I am I ashamed of you. These birds are protected, so please do not shoot them. Sensitive, abe (yeah, right...I bet they do taste like chicken. Let me know, I'll bring the wine)

AOL solution .....

Somebody mentioned seeing CDs spinning. I’ve used them myself, they seem to freakout Cormorants, geese and ducks as well as gulls. We don’t have ospreys here, but it’s worth a try, the discs are free. As an aside, spreading bread crumbs on a rival boat to create bird poo is fun but childish, that happens here a lot ….. Later, eh! Ferg

Thanks Guys!

THANK YOU Acoustic for the grand group of pictures. We are so happy to see the osperys here in Oregon. It means; clean water, lots of fish and happy times for all man and beast. You must grow some ass-kickers there; ours are way too shy to land on a boat with a fish!

Try this

Make up some mono with clips on the ends. When you leave clip the mono from the bimi poles to the backstays or near and above the area which is the problem. By breaking its flyway it should cause it to prefer a different place.

Osprey are so cool

Back in the 60's seeing even a wild goose was a treat in east tennessee. Osprey were unheard of but a-holes were common. One guy up the lake claimed that he shot a bald eagle because it was eating "his" fish. Personally the great blue heron sh#t is worse than osprey. I wanted to shoot a dolphin a few months ago because it deliberately splashed water into my cockpit. I am sure he and his buddies got a few laughs out of that. Anyway a human should be able to scare off a few birds without anything dying. If you can't stand birds, snakes ,gators and muskrats it might be time to hang out at the mall. The muskrats are bad about eating shellfish and leaving the shells. Fortunately they mostly leave the shells on the dock and pontoon boats.

You guys think Ospreys are bad?!!

During the last 20 years Bald Eagles are moving in here. On Hood Canal we have more Eagles than Seagulls! Now they are roosting low and near the roads. And at low tide they wander the beaches looking for a lacks oyster. The only people that stop to look at them anymore are the tourists. Oh, wait a minute,,,,I implied that they were bad, didn't I? The bad part is that it's impossible to comply with protection laws that now exist. We would all have to move out of the county. I'd take a picture but it'd be like photographing a seagull. Besides, I'd feel like a tourist. ;)
