What Sail to Buy

I want to buy new sails for my 1985 22' Hunter. I can only afford 1 main and 1 headsail. May do some PHRF racing. My headsail is hanked on. What size does someone recommend that I should get.(ie 150%, 135%, etc)? Want would the best all around headsail for me to get?

If you can ONLY have one.

Try a 110% jib. If the breeze is too high you'll never be able to control the boat with anything larger. You may also consider looking for a used light air sail.

I would recommend the 135%. If you are going out in strong winds you can leave the head sail below. The 22 sails very well under main alone when the winds are above 15. I would also suggest as Steve did that you look for some used sails for other conditions. You might want a small storm jib and a light air sail (either a 150% or possibly cruising spinnaker if you are comfortable with one). Let us know how it handles with the new sails. I have been buying used sails for around $100 each but would like a new set also.

I had to get new sails when I got my H23 (the old ones looked like Swiss cheese). I contacted every loft and sail maker I could, told them how I was going to use the boat, asked for recommendations, about used sails, and then quote prices. Lee Telnack at Sail Outlet was extremely knowledgeable, patient, explained his answers, and also had the best price. When the sails arrived, the workmanship was fantastic also. We have sailed our h23 for 7 years with a 110 if I just had a choice of one head sail it would have to be a 110 , there are simply too many days when you could not use anything larger, just my opinion , also consider that is what the boats come from the factory , they really are trying to pleasse as many people as possible , you might give a visit to sailrite web site, they have kits, and seems like some pretty good testimonials, good luck enjoy the boat, Mike Bacome
