I was asked this question & don't have an answer. Can any of you new boat owners clue me in? He said it seemed sprayed on as opposed to molded in. Thanks! LaDonna

What I See Is...

My C310 has a molded diamond pattern. This and some of the surrounding area is finished in Grey. I assume it is gelcoat with a slight flattening agent. It seems like it might be a shade less glossy than the surrounding white gelcoat, even in the smooth areas. Because I have had the opportunity to repair some rather deep chips and cracks, I am sure it is applied (sprayed) in the mold.

It depends on the model and where your boat is

made. For example the C320 which is made in Woodland Hills Ca, has a molded in diamond pattern. The Boats made in Largo Fl, like the C380 have a molded in random sand pattern. Many people mistake this for a painted on non-skid. But according to Warren Pandy in Largo, this is actually a difficult and expensive way to make the deck. Evidently it take a lot of man-hours to design and make this mold. He also mention that because it is a random pattern it is easier to repair, especially a larger area.

I agree

I agree with Jon and Duane. I have a new Catalina 22 MkII and it appears to me to be molded rather than sprayed on. The grey diamond patter is a very good non-skid surface, but the white can become a little slippery if you aren't paying close attention.
